MONDAY TOWN / DATA LICENSING
Can a small, sold or closed business license its records?
Business size and operating status are starting questions. The records, permissions and buyer requirements still need review.
Possibly. A small business or a business that has been sold or closed can still have records worth discussing. That does not establish buyer acceptance or prove the current owner has permission to license them.
Fewer than 30 employees
Buyers set their own requirements. Some count office or desk employees rather than everyone on the payroll. Others consider smaller or specialized records. A general headcount advertisement should not decide whether your business can explore every available option.
Describe office staff, field staff and contractors separately. Also explain the systems used, the history retained and the work those records show. Do not inflate the counts to fit a screen.
A sold business
The sale agreement may affect who owns the records and who can authorize their use. Having kept a copy does not settle those questions. Review the actual sale documents and permissions with appropriate advisers before sharing anything.
A closed business
Check whether the old systems and archives can still be accessed and who is authorized to act. The years a business operated can differ from the years of records still retained. Keep those answers separate.
Start with what you know
You do not need a perfectly organized archive to ask an initial question. Begin with a general description and identify the gaps. We can discuss the next questions and an appropriate partner path without asking you to send business files or credentials.
Each buyer makes its own decision. No payment or acceptance is guaranteed.
